THE FARM -  Windy Gowl Farm with its magnificent views over the peat moss to the Moorfoots and with the Pentlands as the spectacular backdrop, is a working farm in a Site of Special Scientific Interest and additional to the horses and ponies, we graze a herd of Red Angus cattle and Icelandic sheep. We are only 15 minutes drive from the Edinburgh City Bypass and a five minute walk takes you down our farm track to the bus route to Edinburgh or to the south.

indoor school

As well as unbeatable outdoor hacking, there is something for most riding abilities at Pentland Hills Livery and we have an indoor arena for those wishing to do a bit of schooling of an evening, take part in a course or some games or enjoy a few lessons from our qualified instructors.

We have over 150 acres of grazing land and can accommodate your special horse grazing requirements from growing youngsters to warm bloods to working horses and, not to forget the veterans where peace and quiet are offered in abundance and checks are frequent. We may have many Icelandics here but we love other breeds too!

If you like to see wildlife close to hand as you ride along, this is the place to be!  There is an abundance of birds in the air, butterflies and moths fluttering over the colourful meadow flowers and hares, foxes, badgers and roe deer making it their home too – all here on the doorstep! And each season is different.

livery foal FACILITIES – We have three big sheds with concreted areas for preparing and tacking up horses, a social area, feed bin area, large and small pens, isolation stables, reception with toilet, coffee machine with area to relax, and a separate alarmed tack room. The car park is large and there is room to park trailers and lorries. We have an indoor arena with lights and a round pen.

FARRIER – Our qualified farrier arrives at 9am every Thursday and all you have to do is put your horse’s name on the white board and what you would
like to be done. We will bring your horse from the field and turn it out again after shoeing.

BIO-SECURITY – We have a healthy herd of horses and would like to keep it that way.  There are disinfectant buckets, quarantine, worming and strangles procedures for incoming horses and risk assessments when attending shows and events. It’s easy and it works.

VETERINARY SERVICES – There is a choice of two vet practices taking care of the horses at Windy Gowl Farm and often you can share visit costs for routine procedures. In the event of an emergency, it’s comforting to know that we are only 15 minutes from the state of the art Dick Vet Equine Hospital at Easter Bush.

HORSE HEALTH – The farm is situated over 1000 ft above sea level and in an open location so midge and fly irritation is very much reduced. Horses with sweet itch get relief almost immediately they arrive and each year the sweet itch symptoms are reduced.  Most fields are interesting and undulating with rough grass which is ideal for horses, and sheep are used to reduce the richness and eat the weeds. Horses and ponies can also be cared for individually if a situation arises that warrants this i.e. illness, too fat, too thin etc.

Like type groups are kept together to increase sociability and playfulness, and respect is given to close bonds. We like to keep our horses happy and their wellbeing is our prime concern. It follows then that the owners are happy too!

We also have "retirement fields" at Rogersrigg. We own lovely big peaceful fields where horses can graze out their retirement with company of their own age. They are carefully checked every day. Contact us to find out about the reasonable rates for this service.

DAILY AND HOLIDAY CHECKS – You can leave your horse here with complete peace of mind, knowing that daily checks will be carried out by professional and knowledgeable staff and we will do more extensive checks when you are away on holiday to make sure all is well.

SECURITY – We live on the farm and the yard lodge is also occupied so there is usually somebody about to keep a watchful eye.  We also have CCTV cameras, security beams and guard dogs on the prowl to chase away any undesirables.

PROFESSIONAL  ADVICE – We have a ‘lifetime’ of equine knowledge, having operated a very successful trekking centre for over 20 years, and alongside this we had a breeding herd of Icelandic horses. We are nearly always available to offer advice where needed, to re-train or sort a horse and to be on hand to help with any problems that arise.

We hope you will come and be a part of our livery group of friendly folk who have made new friends and all have a love for their horse.
