WELCOME TO BRITAIN'S  LARGEST  HERD  OF  ICELANDIC  HORSES!

NEWS FROM WINDY GOWL

SUCCESS AT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Paula won first prize in Intermediate Tölt and Intermediate 4-gait at the British Championships held at the end of June.  She also won the trophy for overall 4-gait. Her horse Viğblainn is by our stallion Svanur fra Midfossum and out of one of our brood mares, Lukka fra Viğivöllum. Viğdblainn spent his first year in Wales before coming north to be reared with the herd at Windy Gowl.  Paula can take all the credit for training this horse, as he was given to her as a 5-year old by Mum for her birthday.  Viğblainn is very versatile and is adept at herding cows and sheep and loves to climb the hills at speed.  We also have 3 sisters of Viğblainn in the breeding herd and they show great potential.

All the participants from Pentland Hills Icelandics did extremely well, at this their first show.

POSTCARD FROM PETRA

Petra Links came on holiday to PHI over 12 years ago and took Glampi fra Skipanesi back home with her to Germany. She has just sent the following news:

"I only wanted to tell that Glampi is still doing fine. He's now 20 years old and still full of power. It's fantastic! Every day he goes very clear tölt without any sign of pace or trot. He's still great.

But the best! Last weekend we had the masterships of "Nordrhein-Westfalen" - it's the big region around Cologne. We had at about 272 starters. A very big mastership. And Glampi won the mastership in the eventing. It was so great! And it was such a good conclusion because it was his last tournament. I want you to know that! I never regret that I bought him! He' s really great! Now I ride him through the forest and only have fun with him."

OUR LATEST TRIP TO ICELAND

This month we travelled to Iceland to look at horses and caught up again with Hemmi who comes regularly to give training courses at Windy Gowl.  He is a great source of help and information on horses and on riding in Iceland.  For more information, visit his new website on http://www.efri-brunavellir.is,

Hofsi

GRASS SICKNESS

It's great news that we have to report that Hofsi who was diagnosed with Grass Sickness in 2005 has made a fantastic recovery and has now been lightly backed.

He is lucky to have survived and the knowledge gained in nursing him has helped to support Andrea Addison's little horse Aischa in Belgium - she too is well on the road to recovery.

Sadly these cases of survival are rare and grass sickness is usually a fatal disease. This highlights again how important it is that we continue our fund-raising efforts, to support efforts to find a solution to this awful disease. POSTCARD FROM UNDRI

Undri, born in 1994, is a son of Gjosta and half brother to Glaesir.  Caroline Schurmann, who worked at PHI for a year, bought him as a 7 year old and took him to Switzerland when she went home.  She has trained him on and is now having great success in 5 gait competitions.

ABEL

The well-loved stallion Abel from Rickarton passed away at Windy Gowl. He was 29 year old. He had lived a very full life and his offspring are now spread far and wide - with two getting as far as Germany!
